Next gen war - sale by sale.

Wednesday 12 Jul 2006 : 00:57 AM

We've all got our own ideas about how the next gen console war will pan out but if you want to know exactly how it's going, keep an eye on NexGenWars.com

Obviously Microsoft are absolutely spanking the competition so far because they are the only company to have released their console but sales of 4 million so far is still pretty impressive.

We're not sure how close they will come to their target of selling 10 million 360's by the time PS3 is released (especially as there isn't much happening on the release front before November) but at least now we'll know exactly what's going on.

Evo - new console to appear this year ?

Wednesday 12 Jul 2006 : 00:39 AM

US firm Envizions Computer Entertainment today issued a press release claiming that it will release it's new console in October in the US and it will only be available to buy onine.

The idea that a virtually unknown can enter the console market with no backing from any game studios and presumably very little budget seems quite laughable (also see: the phantom) but actually this one may not be so silly.

From what we can see it's basically a media centre PC aimed at gamers meaning that thousands of games are already available and you'll be able to play them on your TV, with proper controllers! You'll also be able to download 1600 games from their online store.

It comes with video-on-demand software installed and with many people saying the blu-ray/HD DVD drives are only a stopgap to proper on demand services this may prove a very successful feature.

For a Media Centre PC it's also not that expensive at just under $700.

Still sound silly ?

Zidane Flash Game

Tuesday 11 Jul 2006 : 23:40 PM

Well that didn't take long did it.

Head on over to funnymovies.net to practise headbutting Italian defenders.

Now if only somebody would replace Materazzi with Christiano Ronaldo we'd be more than happy.

Microsoft handheld before the end of the year ?

Thursday 06 Jul 2006 : 15:25 PM

Rumours of microsoft entering the handgeld gaming market with an 'xboy' have been refuelled by a Bloomberg story yesterday that MS is planning to release an "ipod-killer" before the end of the year which will play music and video.

The device will be wireless compatible, users will be able do download music as long as they are within range of a wireless router, meaning that downloads could be sold in shops, hotels, petrol stations etc. At the moment the ipod can only download music by connecting it to a pc/mac with iTunes on it.

There is no word on whether you will be able to play games on it but given that they are hell-bent on being number 1 in the video games market it would make sense for them to release a handheld at some pointas it's crucial to strengthening the xbox brand.

The xboy is only a matter of time, you'll see.

Sony borrows about £400 million

Wednesday 05 Jul 2006 : 20:44 PM

£376,746,816.14 to be exact, or 80 billion yen.

Read into this what you will but this is the first time Sony has borrowed money from investors in 10 years. Sony hasn't been doing that well recently, it's consumer electronics division hasn't been doing that well and PS2 revenues must be starting to slip.

It would probably have needed to borrow some money anyway as it's invested huge amounts of money in the Cell processor and Blu-Ray and even with the hefty price tag of the PS3 it will still be subsidising that for a while so it's unlikely to see healthy profits from that until 2008.

Despite their huge console market share and brand loyalty you've got to say that Sony is taking a lot of risks at the moment, as are Nintendo with their new controller. The next year is going to be very, very interesting.

GTA iV fake screenshots doing the rounds.

Thursday 22 Jun 2006 : 18:43 PM

Earlier on today we came across, the picture above which apparently was posted on Games Radar forums by a 'disgruntled Rockstar employee'. We didn't post it because it was quite clearly a fake and we wouldn't want to give any credence to these time-wasters but it's amazing just how many nig news sites get suckered in by this kind of stuff.

Must try harder!

Tuesday 13 Jun 2006 : 13:49 PM

Last weeks Uk sales chart has new entries for Sensible Soccer 2006, which was only actually released on Friday 9th so would probably have charted higher on a whole week of sales, Brain Training on the DS and Moto GP 06 on the Xbox 360.

No surprise about the top 3 big hitters although how FIFA continues to chart higher than Pro Evo we'll never know.

1 - FIFA World Cup Germany 2006
2 - Hitman: Blood Money
3 - Tomb Raider: Legend
4 - Moto GP 06
5 - Pro Evolution Soccer 5
6 - Dr Kawashima's Brain Training
7 - Sensible Soccer 2006
8 - Half-Life 2: Episode One
9 - Animal Crossing: Wild World
10 - X-Men: The Official Game
